Academics

AP Spanish Language and Culture

Develop your Spanish language skills and learn about the cultures in Spanish-speaking parts of the world. You’ll practice communicating in Spanish and study real-life materials such as newspaper articles, films, music, and books.

Skills You’ll Learn

  • Understanding Spanish when you hear it and read it

  • Holding conversations in real-life situations

  • Writing stories, letters, emails, essays, and other texts

(typically offered in 11th Grade)

AP Spanish Literature and Culture

Build your language skills and cultural knowledge by exploring works of literature written in Spanish. Using Spanish to communicate, you’ll read, analyze, discuss, and write about works by Spanish, Latin-American, and U.S. Hispanic authors of different periods.

Skills You’ll Learn

  • Interpreting, analyzing, and comparing literary works

  • Relating literary works to their cultural and historical contexts

  • Comparing literary works to works of art

  • Writing a literary analysis using correct literary terms

  • Discussing works of literature

(typically offered in 12th Grade)

AP French Language and Culture

AP French is an advanced course for students who want to strengthen their French skills and deepen their understanding of French-speaking cultures around the world. The class is taught almost entirely in French and focuses on the three modes of communication:

  1. Interpersonal – speaking and writing in conversations (emails, messages, discussions).

  2. Interpretive – understanding spoken and written French (articles, audio, films, songs).

  3. Presentational – creating in French (speeches, essays, cultural presentations).

Course Goals

  • Develop strong listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in French.

  • Explore themes such as family, education, technology, global issues, and cultural identity.

  • Learn about history, traditions, and current issues in French-speaking countries (France, Canada, Africa, the Caribbean, etc.).

  • Prepare for the AP French Language and Culture Exam, which tests communication and cultural knowledge.

Student Work

  • Participate daily in French conversations.

  • Write essays, summaries, and journal entries in French.

  • Listen to authentic French sources like news, podcasts, and music.

  • Research cultural topics and compare them with students’ own communities.

AP Seminar uses an inquiry framework to study real-world topics and issues from a variety of perspectives.  The purpose of the class is to help students develop their analytical, research, writing, and presentation skills, as well as to develop their ability to evaluate information for credibility and relevance.  Students will read, view, and listen to news articles, research studies, literary texts, speeches, personal accounts, and artistic works/performances, and will learn to conduct their own online research to find sources to answer questions about topics that interest them.  They will synthesize the information they have gathered into written reports, argumentative essays, and team and individual presentations.
 

Skills you will learn:

  • Understanding and analyzing arguments;
  • Understanding and analyzing the context of a problem or issue;
  • Conducting research to find scholarly and news sources;
  • Evaluating sources and evidence for credibility and relevance;
  • Creating clear and well-reasoned arguments supported by persuasive evidence;
  • Comparing and analyzing various perspectives on a problem or issue;
  • Engaging an audience through effective presentation techniques;
  • Applying consistent conventions for written work and citations;
  • Collaborating with peers to accomplish a task; and
  • Reflecting on the knowledge you gained and skills you developed through the inquiry process.

Claremont International High School has a robust work based learning (WBL) program available to students. Our WBL program offers income and high school credit. Some of our highlights include:

– 189 students participated in a PAID experience

– 89 students participated in SYEP

– 59 Students participated in Career Connect

– 23 students in COOP program

– 2 OSHA, 1 CRMYA Apprenticeship, 1 EMT

– 28+ Internship sites

All 11th grade students participate in an internship program. Claremont partners with different employers to provide students with a variety of off-campus internship opportunities.

Through our WBL programs students will prepare for their working lives by learning to:

  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and colleagues.

  • Become more independent and responsible

  • Understand what it means to be professional: dress, behavior, communication

College Now is a FREE college transition/dual enrollment program for New York City Department of Education high school students. Claremont IHS partners with Hostos Community College to offer our students College Now courses.

College Now @ Hostos Community College is a campus-based program offering college credit courses after school on weekdays. College credit courses include Anatomy and Physiology, Business, Criminal Justice, Medical Terminology, Psychology, Public Speaking, Acting, and Community Health.

Introduction to Business Management through Cornell University and Responsible and Ethical AI through University of Notre Dame. Through this program students have an opportunity to take college level courses and earn credits. 

Students at Claremont have the opportunity to access FutureReadyNYC. This is a reimagined high school experience where students can explore career paths in cybersecurity. Claremont students will be able to gain critical career exploration and experience through this program.
